DeVry University partners with Caribbean institutions to expand higher education

The Saint Lucia Hospitality and Tourism Association (SLHTA) and the AcademiX School of Learning have both signed landmark agreements with the US-based DeVry University aimed at expanding access to higher education for tourism professionals in both countries.

The initiative, part of DeVry’s Caribbean Bridge to Brilliance program, offers eligible students 50% tuition savings and a waived application fee for the university’s online bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.

In St. Lucia, the signing ceremony brought together SLHTA and DeVry representatives, hoteliers, and human resource professionals. SLHTA President Erwin Louisy described the partnership as a major step forward in the association’s commitment to workforce development.

“For years, the SLHTA has been deliberate in forging partnerships that expand educational and training opportunities for our industry professionals. But today, we are raising the bar,” Louisy said. “This agreement goes beyond operational certifications to include degree and diploma programs in fields critical to the future of hospitality—hospitality management, technology, human resources, business administration and more.”

DeVry University’s Vice President of Public Workforce Solutions, Scarlett Howery, called the collaboration “a meaningful moment” for the institution. “Education has the power to transform lives,” she said. “It’s about breaking down barriers to education and equipping employees with real-world skills they can apply in a global economy.”

Employees of SLHTA member companies, as well as independent members, can apply for the program, which offers flexible online learning designed to fit around work and family commitments.

Louisy noted that the initiative supports the Saint Lucian government’s goal of having a university graduate in every household and will help strengthen the island’s tourism talent pool.

While in Dominica, DeVry University also signed an agreement with AcademiX School of Learning to create greater access to educational pathways for learners in that country. AcademiX, a private institution in Portsmouth with more than a decade of experience, is known for integrating real-world scenarios and innovative technologies into its teaching.

“This partnership marks a historic step for Dominica,” said AcademiX Director Heman Williams. “What began as a seed five years ago is now bearing fruit, empowering our nation with full access to globally relevant programs.”

Under the agreement, AcademiX students can seamlessly transfer into DeVry’s online programs, with eligible learners receiving up to 50% tuition savings. The pathway will prepare students for global careers in business, healthcare, and technology.

Dr. Shantanu Bose, DeVry’s Provost and Chief Academic Officer, emphasized the broader mission: “We are deeply committed to preparing learners for the demands of a global economy. This partnership reaffirms our commitment to breaking down barriers and increasing access to higher education across the Caribbean.”

Both partnerships signal a growing effort to strengthen Caribbean workforces through flexible, globally recognized education—creating opportunities not only for career advancement but also for the region’s long-term economic resilience.
