‘Do-or-die game’

2 weeks ago 4

Courtney Dowdie, head coach of Frazsiers Whip, and Everdean Scarlett, head coach of Cavalier, are both ready to put it all on the line when their teams line up in the final of the Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) today at the Ashenheim Stadium.

Defending champions Frazsiers Whip will look to claim their third-consecutive final but face a strong challenge from title aspirants Cavalier when they take to the field for kick-off at 7 p.m.

The final will be the main feature of a double header at the venue, as Arnett Gardens will face Los Perfectos in the third-place match at 4 p.m.

The fixture is a repeat of the 2023 final, where Frazsiers Whip walked away victors after clipping Cavalier 1-0.

Dowdie, however, said their recent history against Cavalier will have little impact today, as there will be zero margin for error for both teams

“Preparations have been good. We have done some recovery, so we’re looking ahead for the finals,” the Frazsiers Whip boss said.

“Nothing in the past matters now. The game ahead is a do-or-die game. Whoever wants it on the day will come out on top.”

Now one win away from defending their title, the St Catherine-based Frazsiers Whip will look to see out their season’s ambitions by taking the win with an unbeaten record.

Dowdie guaranteed they will show up in the final playing their usual attacking and free-flowing play style.

“There is some pressure somewhat but I don’t think it’s too much pressure. We know what we have to do to remain unbeaten. It is a goal of ours that we wanted to achieve, so it’s just a goal that we’re working towards as a team,” he said.

“As always, we’re going to play good football and I know my team will always bring free-flowing football to the table.”

READY TO CHALLENGE

For Cavalier, today’s meeting will be a chance to avenge their defeat in 2023 and claim the elusive national title.

Scarlett is aware it will not be an easy outing for his charges, but remains confident they can pull off the win.

“I think we have to just focus for the entire game. We know we’re going up against tough opponents, the defending champions, so it is up to us to stay focused and get the job done.”

A major part of the team’s preparations for the final has been attending to a few injuries with the hope they will have a fully fit squad for the final.

Scarlett said this will be important to his team’s chances as he prepares his game plan for the match.

“We have a few injuries that we have been taking care of, and we’re hoping that we will have everybody ready for the final. That is where we are at.

“A few key players for us have been struggling with minor injuries. So we’re just managing them and we’re hopefully everybody will be fit.”
