DOE to Host Placencia Shoreline Protection Meeting This Thursday

The Belize Department of the Environment is hosting an “Erosion and Shoreline Stabilization” presentation this Thursday, April 9, at the Placencia Basketball Court. The session starts at 5:30 p.m. and will focus on proposals for beach protection and long-term coastal management.  The event will showcase findings from extensive coastal assessments, including over one hundred beach profiles and bathymetry surveys conducted along the Placencia Peninsula. Experts say the data will help guide solutions to address ongoing beach erosion and strengthen shoreline resilience.  Participants will also hear from international specialists, including Dr. Ping Wang and Libby Royer, who are expected to present proposed strategies for shore protection and sustainable management.  The session will serve as a validation workshop, giving community members an opportunity to weigh in on the findings and recommendations developed under the Strong Coasts project in collaboration with the Placencia Village Council.  According to the agenda, the event will include remarks from Orlando Habet, followed by a presentation and interactive discussions.  Organizers are encouraging residents, stakeholders, and business owners to attend and contribute to shaping solutions that will safeguard one of Belize’s most valuable coastal regions.
