Belize has strengthened its diplomatic representation abroad with the appointment of a new ambassador to the United Nations Office in Geneva. Prime Minister John Briceño has appointed Dr. Harold A. Young as Belize’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva. Dr. Young has already presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva, formally assuming his duties. Dr. Young brings an extensive academic background to the post. He has served in several positions in academia both locally and internationally, most recently as an Associate Professor of Political Science and Public Management at Austin Peay State University, while also advising the Department of History at the University of Belize. He holds a doctorate in Public Law from Georgia State University, earned in 2016. His research focused on the role of extraterritorial courts, drawing on the experience of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Young is also a published author, writing on subjects spanning history, law and politics. Government says Ambassador Young will also be nominated for accreditation to the World Trade Organization, further expanding Belize’s representation in international diplomacy and trade matters.
