Drake’s Team Responds After Court Dismisses UMG Lawsuit

Drake’s legal team has issued a statement following the dismissal of his lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), in which he accused the label of defamation, harassment, and violation of New York business law over Kendrick Lamar’s viral diss track “Not Like Us.”

In the 38-page opinion filed by Judge Jeannette A. Vargas of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the court ruled that the statements made in “Not Like Us” were “nonactionable opinion” and thus not grounds for defamation. The judge granted UMG’s motion to dismiss under Rule 12(b)(6) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.

A representative for Drake said in a statement to World Music Views:

“While we respect the Court’s decision, this case was never about silencing artistic expression. It was about accountability. There’s a difference between creativity and character assassination. Drake maintains that the false insinuations in ‘Not Like Us’ crossed that line.”

The lawsuit stemmed from Drake’s claim that UMG knowingly promoted and monetized the 2024 hit song by Kendrick Lamar, despite what he described as “defamatory and harmful” accusations within its lyrics. “Not Like Us,” which became a global sensation and cultural flashpoint during their high-profile feud, contains lyrics insinuating inappropriate conduct—claims the Toronto rapper vehemently denied.

Drake’s team added that while they are disappointed in the outcome, they “remain committed to defending [his] name and reputation” and are evaluating next steps, including a possible appeal.

UMG has not publicly commented on the decision, which effectively ends the case at the district court level.
