Dry Conditions Blamed for Declining New River Water Quality

The Department of the Environment says prolonged dry conditions and reduced river flow are contributing to changes in water quality within the New River. In a statement issued yesterday, the department explained that Belize has been experiencing drier-than-usual weather, resulting in lower water levels and slower river movement. Those conditions can reduce oxygen levels in the water and encourage the growth of algae and naturally occurring bacteria, leading to a decline in overall water quality. Officials say routine monitoring has detected these changes and that environmental officers are continuing to assess conditions at several locations along the river. The department is working alongside other government agencies and technical partners to monitor water quality and determine whether further action may be required.  As a precaution, residents living near affected sections of the river are advised to avoid contact with discoloured or foul-smelling water. Members of the public are also being urged not to consume dead or distressed fish and to report on any unusual environmental conditions to the relevant authorities.  The Department of the Environment noted that fluctuations in water quality are more likely during extended periods of drought but, stressed that continued monitoring is essential to determine how conditions evolve in the coming days. DoE mentioned it will continue sampling the New River and will provide further updates should conditions change or additional public health advisories become necessary.
