EDWIN Allen High’s Monique Stewart gave herself a big morale booster going into her collegiate career on Saturday. The 20-year-old who was plagued with injury earlier in the season, disrupting her ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs) preparation, clocked a massive personal best (PB) of 2:05.30 while competing in the women’s senior 800 metres at the JAAA National Senior and Junior Championships. She finished sixth overall.

Head girl at the school and captain of their track and field team for the past two seasons, Stewart entered the 2025 track and field season with a personal best of 2:07. She showed signs that she was in good nick when she improved that mark to 2:06.00 at the final All Comers JAAA meet at the National Stadium. The time was the fourth-best girls’ time in Edwin Allen’s history. Edwin Allen have produced multiple standout half-milers in past years.

Stewart, who will attend the University of Northern Colorado this fall, stated that this was great motivation for her going into college.

“Honestly, I feel amazing. I’ve been working really hard for this moment, and to see the hard work pay off with a personal best is a blessing. I give God thanks, my coaches, teammates, family, and all those who supported me,” said Stewart.

“This gives me a big boost of confidence heading into college this fall. I know there is a lot more to improve, but this is definitely a strong step in the right direction,” she added.

Head coach of the Edwin Allen team, Michael Dyke, was extremely pleased with Stewart’s achievement.

“This is remarkable for a girl who trained this season up to the Jamaica College meet, and then basically could not train effectively after that leading into Champs, and was still able to finish fourth in the 1500m and third in the 800m at Champs. Though performing way below her best, it was remarkable, as she went out there determined to assist her school, gathering points and leading from the front as team captain,” said Dyke.
