A tragic incident unfolded just before eleven o’clock last night in San Antonio Village, Toledo District when 90-year-old Lucia Sho was burnt inside a house. Punta Gorda Police received reports of the fire incident at 12:40 this morning, almost two hours after the incident. When they arrived in the area, they found the structure completely destroyed, with only the charred remains of the building left standing. Among the debris, police discovered the body of a person burned beyond recognition. Police later spoke with 33-year-old Margarita Cowo, who lives about 50 yards away from the destroyed home. According to Cowo, she and others attempted to rescue the occupant, but the fire was too intense.
“10:45 yesterday last night it happened to my grandmother in law. This happened when we heard her crying and I hurried. My husband was not home, I was at home by myself and my little son and when I heard her crying and then suddenly my husband reached in and I told him like I heard something like I heard my granny. I said let’s go see her. When we reached to her man it really shocked me. I didn’t know but it happens. I didn’t know this would happen to my granny but nevertheless it already happened.”
The elderly woman was grandmother to Cowo’s husband. An official report on the cause of the fire is yet to be released. Our Toledo Senior Correspondent Paul Mahung also spoke with the village chairman, Jeremiah Salam.
“This is a tragic loss for the community of San Antonio Toledo. A senior citizen, 90 years old. I know their family, their sons are my friends and condolences to the family. Myself and my council were just thinking about the elders, the senior citizens of San Antonio what we need to do for this coming Christmas season. Our ideal plan was to visit them and giving them some chairs for the season and now with this loss it’s a major loss for the community of San Antonio.”
The village of San Antonio is located some 21 miles from Punta Gorda Town, Toledo District.
