All eyes will be on Belize City this Sunday as the People’s United Party holds its municipal convention to select the team that will represent the party in the March 2027 municipal elections. At the centre of the convention is the highly anticipated mayoral race between City Councillors Eluide Miller and Allan Pollard Junior. Both men are experienced members of the Belize City Council and are now seeking the party’s nomination to succeed Mayor Bernard Wagner. Miller, the current Deputy Mayor, has secured the backing of several members of the existing council and senior figures within the party. Pollard, a three-term councillor and former Deputy Mayor, has based his campaign on his experience, youth and plans for the future development of Belize City. Approximately seven hundred and eighty-seven delegates drawn from the city’s ten constituencies will decide the outcome. They will also select ten councillor candidates to complete the PUP’s Belize City slate. PUP Chairman Henry Charles Usher says voting will run from nine o’clock in the morning until four o’clock in the afternoon. He says a system has been put in place to keep the process moving and prevent delegates from spending long periods waiting in line.
Henry Charles Usher, PUP Chairman: “It’s delegates so there are slots for each constituency. So I think that each constituency drew straws and determine who would vote first and then you have a time period when each constituency can go in and vote. So let’s say if a delegate does not reach for that constituency during their……tthey can still vote but we want to at least have all of Pickstock, all of Collet, all of Fort George, of Lake I vote together so that we can the process can go smoothly. Just like any other election. You have ballot papers and people will be there. The candidates will be allowed to have scrutineers, will be allowed to have counters. You have the official counters working the team and then you count the ballots. There are how many, 19 candidates for councillors so that might take a little while. The mayoral race shouldn’t take too long to count but the councillor candidate race you have 19 because persons aren’t going to vote I don’t believe are going to vote straight down the line they’ll be choosing their candidates based on who they want to support. So that might take a little longer, but yeah, an hour hour and a half we should be completed.”
Usher is encouraging delegates to follow the voting arrangements and arrive within the designated period. The Belize City convention forms part of the PUP’s ongoing process to finalize its candidates across all nine municipalities ahead of next year’s elections
