Emerson West and a sixteen-year-old boy have been remanded into custody following the continuation of their arraignment for the murder of nineteen-year-old Dodrick Madrill. The two appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday with their attorney, Norman Rodriguez. The Chief Magistrate explained that bail could not be granted at that court because of the nature of the charge. West was remanded to the Belize Central Prison, while the minor was remanded to the Wagner’s Youth Facility on the prison compound. Their next court appearance is scheduled for February 11, 2027. The arraignment had been halted the previous day after both accused expressed a desire to give police their account of what happened. Speaking outside court, Rodriguez said his clients told him they were returned to the police station and placed in a cell, but no statements were taken before they were brought back to court. That claim concerns the period after their first court appearance. Police separately report that both accused had been interviewed earlier in the investigation, with the minor declining to continue his interview. Madrill was fatally shot on Freedom Street on the morning of October 29. Investigators say he was walking in the area when a gunman approached and opened fire. He was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police say surveillance footage captured an exchange involving Madrill and occupants of a white van before the shooting. Investigators allege that subsequent footage showed the gunman pursuing Madrill and firing at him. Police later located and impounded a van they believe was connected to the incident. The allegations against West and the minor have not been proven in court.
