Two men, including a former national Under-17 footballer and a music artiste, are dead and a third hospitalised following a single-vehicle crash along the Southern Main Road, St Margaret’s, in the early hours of Saturday.

Dead are Tyrek “Skunk” James, 27, a labourer of Marabella, and 38-year-old Marques Figaro of Cypress Ridge, Union Hall, also known in music circles as “Rasta Marky”. Both were passengers in the vehicle.

James previously represented Trinidad and Tobago at the Under-17 level, while Figaro had been active in the local music scene.

Police said the driver, Denilson St Vincent, 25, of Marabella, was seriously injured and taken to the San Fernando General Hospital, where he remained under medical care up to late yesterday.

According to reports, the crash occurred around 3.40 am when St Vincent was driving a silver Nissan Almera south along the roadway, with James seated in the front passenger seat and Figaro in the rear.

Investigators believe the driver swerved left in an attempt to avoid roadworks carried out by the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) along the western lane. The vehicle then crossed the roadway and slammed into a concrete and steel wall on the eastern side.

The impact caused extensive damage to the front and sides of the car. James and Figaro were pronounced dead at the scene by District Medical Officer Dr Santlal.

Emergency Health Services personnel transported the injured driver to the hospital.

The bodies were later removed to the San Fernando Mortuary pending post-mortem examinations.

The wrecked vehicle was towed to the St Margaret’s Police Station as investigations continue. Police said efforts to interview the driver were unsuccessful due to his medical condition.
