The family of Averzon Miller, a woman who has been missing since 2023, is demanding closure, saying they have been waiting for confirmation that a body found nearly two years ago is hers.
Her sister, Kealizanda Grant, told Guardian Media that since September 2023, the police took DNA samples from family members after a decomposing body was found on a beach in Chatham.
However, to this day, she said, the family is still awaiting the results.
A 43-year-old mother of six from Fanny Village in Point Fortin, Averzon Miller, left her home in July 2023 and never returned.
Her sister said the family has been suffering with the uncertainty ever since, and needs closure.
“We have to go about our lives,” she told Guardian Media. “If we could get her body, that would be the best thing ever … The thing is, we’re not getting her body to be at peace in our minds and our hearts. That is a hard portion.”
“Sometimes I wake up in the night, crying,” she revealed, “because I can’t do anything about it.”
On Friday 21 July 2023, the body of a woman was found along the shoreline in Chatham. The body was in an advanced stage of decomposition.
Guardian Media understands a 61-year-old man discovered the body while strolling along the beach, some three-quarters of a mile off Food Crop Road.
The body was found down with legs crossed, clad in a bra and what appeared to be a black cloth covering the back.
The body was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital mortuary, and an autopsy was conducted at the Forensic Science Centre.
Officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region 3 and South-Western Division were involved in the investigation.
