THE KINGSTON College pair of Jaj-Marques White and Marcinho Rose brought the house down on the penultimate day of the Carifta Trials yesterday, finishing one-two in the under-20 boys’ 400 metres at the G.C. Foster College.
In what was a highly competitive race, Whyte clocked a personal best of 46.15 seconds to finish ahead of Rose, who crossed the line in 46.40.
Excelsior High School’s Daniel Wright was third in 46.50.
In a thrilling blanket finish in the boys’ under-17 event, Rushaine Richards of St Jago High clinched victory in 48.21 seconds – the same time recorded by second-place finisher Diwayne Sharpe of Calabar. Chanton Whyte of Denbigh High was third in 49.34.
In the girls’ under-17 final, Shameika McLean of Foga Road claimed victory in 54.47 seconds, finishing ahead of Holmwood duo Tracy-Ann Evans (54.84) and Anasadia Hall (54.95).
Vere Technical’s Shevaughn Thomas took the under-20 girls’ title in 53.60, edging out Abrina Wright of Holmwood (53.66), while Madisson Hall, also from Holmwood, finished third in 54.33.
Immaculate Conception’s Jamie-Lee Tulloch secured her second win of the meet. Following success in the girls’ under-17 shot put on Friday, she captured the discus title with a throw of 42.44 metres. Davieka Lewis of St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) took second with 40.70, while Dejaunae Rudolph of Holmwood Technical was third with 40.50.
Edwin Allen’s Shamoyea Morris dominated the girls’ under-20 discus with a throw of 51.06 metres, relegating shot put winner Marla-Kay Lampart of Clarendon College to second place (50.80). Giana Clayton of Excelsior finished third with 48.52.
5.37 METRES-LEAP
Tshani Armstrong of STETHS won the girls’ under-17 long jump with a leap of 5.37 metres, finishing ahead of Tijana Peart of Holmwood (5.30), and Sackaya Palmer of St Mary High (5.21).
In the under-20 girls’ high jump, Danielle Noble of Wolmer’s Girls’ soared to 1.78 metres, the same height as second-place finisher Shaniqua Williams of St. Andrew High.
Outstanding times were recorded in the preliminary round of the 400-metre hurdles with Edwin Allen’s Kelly-Ann Carr leading the girls’ under-20 event after clocking 57.87 seconds. Vere’s Thomas (59.47), and Rhianna Lewis of William Knibb, (personal best 59.78), were the second and third-fastest qualifiers.
Three athletes dipped under 53 seconds in the boys’ under-20 400-metre hurdles qualifiers. Princewell Martin of Jamaica College led with 52.21, followed by Robert Miller of Calabar (52.79) and Theo Morgan of Edwin Allen (52.97), all winning their heats.
In the preliminary round of the 200 metres, Rhianna Scott of Ferncourt High emerged as the fastest qualifier in the girls’ under-17 event, winning her heat in 24.56. Seana Wilson of Alpha (24.86) and Danielle Dixon of William Knibb (24.98) also advanced.
Another thrilling showdown is expected in the girls’ under-20 200m final today, where Sabrina Dockery of Lacovia High and Shanoya Douglas of Muschett High will renew their rivalry after their epic 100-metre clash on Friday. Dockery is the fastest qualifier with 23.43 seconds, ahead of Douglas (23.75), and Rhianna Allen of STETHS (24.20).
Both Jaydon Collins of Holmwood Technical and Gary Card of Wolmer’s will be seeking sprint doubles following their 100m wins on Friday.
Collins clocked 21.95 seconds to be the second-fastest qualifier in the boys’ Under-17 200m, with Taheem Thompson of Edwin Allen leading the pack with 21.59.
Card won his heat in 20.87, while Edwin Allen’s Antonio Powell was the fastest qualifier with 20.84.
