Father-Son Dispute Ends With 62-Year-Old Charged Over Damaged Locks

A family dispute between an 85-year-old father and his 62-year-old son has ended with the son being charged with damage to property.  Evan Delsworth Grenwich Wade, a Belizean-American retired veteran visiting from California, appeared in Magistrate’s Court this afternoon after spending a night in police custody. Wade is accused of damaging two padlocks and two deadbolt locks at his father’s home on Keating Crescent in Belize City. The locks are valued at 130 dollars. The alleged damage occurred yesterday, September 17.  Wade appeared with attorney Bryan Neal and was read one count of damage to property. The prosecution did not object to bail but asked the court to clarify where Wade would stay, since the address he provided was the same home occupied by his father, Carl Wade.  Neal told the court that Wade had been staying with his father to care for him but normally lives in Dangriga. Bail was granted in the sum of 300 dollars, plus one surety in the same amount. Wade met bail and is due back in court on November 18.

According to the police report, the dispute began after Carl Wade sought a protection order against his son. That application was reportedly denied, and Wade later had several locks at his home changed.  The following morning, Carl was told that his son was at the house. Police were called, and when Carl returned, he reportedly found several locks damaged.

Carl also reported that two passports, two sets of land documents, a vehicle certificate and cash were missing from the house. Police processed the scene and later charged Evan Wade only with damage to property. No burglary or theft charge was read to him during today’s arraignment
