Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) has received the Cross Border Collaboration Excellence Award at the UK-Belize Climate and Nature Legacy Awards held last week. The event was funded by the United Kingdom’s Climate and Nature Diplomacy Fund and organized through the British High Commission in Belize. Projects were nominated by technical teams and independently evaluated before final approval by the British High Commissioner and programme officials.
FCD was recognized for its project focused on forest fire prevention and response cooperation between Belize and Guatemala. The initiative established shared emergency protocols, community outreach programmes, and laid the groundwork for a joint Belize–Guatemala Forest Fire Taskforce. The effort also included training and equipment support aimed at protecting the Maya Forest and reducing wildfire risks across the border. According to FCD, the work builds on a 2014 environmental cooperation agreement between the governments of Belize and Guatemala. Through partnerships with organizations in Guatemala, the programme also supports biodiversity protection, river conservation, and community development activities. The British High Commission says the award highlights the importance of regional collaboration in addressing environmental threats that affect both countries.
