A female prisons officer with more than 19 years of service was arrested at the Golden Grove Prison on Monday morning after she was allegedly found with a quantity of prohibited articles.

According to a release from the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service, the officer was arrested around 8:48 a.m. during a routine security check.

The officer was cautioned and police were contacted. Officers from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) escorted her to the Arouca Police Station, where she was assisting with inquiries and was expected to be formally charged.

Acting Commissioner of Prisons Elvin Scanterbury commended the officers who intercepted the alleged trafficking of contraband, including the officer’s colleagues.

The Prison Service said this was the first recorded instance of a female prisons officer being found engaged in trafficking contraband.

It said no individual, regardless of gender or rank, is above the law and reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance towards illicit trafficking and illegal activity by staff.
