A former classmate described 19-year-old Kavish Persad as a “ferocious debater” yesterday, as relatives, friends, and schoolmates bid farewell to the Hillview College scholar who died in a car accident along the Beetham Highway on Tuesday.
Persad’s funeral was held at his family’s Mahelal Street, Aranguez, home, before a large procession made its way to the Caroni Cremation Site, where he was cremated under Hindu rites. Members of the media were not permitted inside the service, which was attended by scores of classmates dressed in their school uniforms.
Among them was fellow Hillview student Samuel Bleche, who recalled his fond memories of Persad, with whom he represented the school on CNC3’s Make Your Point debate show.
“I spent many long nights with him collaborating—it was really fun. He was more than a friend, more like a brother at that point in time. It was really sad to see him go,” Bleche said.
He described Persad as a meticulous and passionate debater.
“Ferocious, and ferocious for a reason—because he was very passionate about it and meant what he said,” he added.
Persad’s death came just one day after he received his CAPE results: five grade ones and one grade two.
Hillview College, in a Facebook tribute on Friday, hailed him as an exceptional student and leader.
“Kavish was an exceptional student whose academic excellence and quiet determination set him apart,” the school said.
“Beyond academics, he proudly represented Hillview College in debating, and was president of the Student Council in Lower 6, embodying the confidence, intellect, and the leadership we encourage in all our young men. His leadership during Divali celebrations and in the Film and Photography Club brought a sense of renewed cultural appreciation at Hillview.
“Kavish will be remembered, not only for his achievements, but also for his warm spirit, humility, and the inspiration he provided to his peers and teachers alike. His loss is deeply felt across our Hillview community.”
Police reported that Persad died after his car ran off the Beetham Highway and crashed into a river on Tuesday evening. He was reportedly attempting to overtake another vehicle when the accident occurred.
