Jamaica’s senior men’s basketball team produced a strong performance in their opening match at the FIBA America World Cup pre-qualifiers in Mexico yesterday with a decisive 101-79 victory over Barbados.
They were led by Romaine Thomas and Romario Gill. Thomas was outstanding as he registered 20 points, 10 rebounds, four assists. Gill scored 19 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and had four blocks.
Kenton Facey also contributed 15 points, Norman Powell 12 and Giovanni Frazer 10.
The Jamaicans led from start to finish, taking a 36-23 advantage after the first quarter and a 54-40 lead at half-time.
The Rick Martin-coached team kept their double-digit advantage over their Caribbean rivals after the break and were up 78-67 at the end of the third period before going on to register a convincing 22 points victory.
Barbados’ Kyrone Alexander was the game’s topscorer with 28 points and nine rebounds. Akeem Marsh supported with 16 points.
Jamaica will face Costa Rica in their second game today at 6 p.m. (Jamaica time).
