Fire Breaks Out Behind Police Station After Live Wire Falls

A fallen live wire ignited a fire this morning behind the Independence Police Station.  Reports of the fire surfaced just after nine o’clock when the fire fighters and the personnel from the Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) were summoned to respond.   Love News spoke with Assistant Superintendent of Belize, Stacy Smith, who explained that the fire fighters had to wait for BEL personnel to arrive at the scene before the fire could have been extinguished.

Stacy Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Police: “At approximately 10:30 a.m. today June 10th, police officers in the Southern Regional Formation, particularly at the ISF which is located in Independence, ISF station, which is located in Independence, were alerted to a fire that was ongoing on the eastern side of that compound. The police officers observed that there was a high tension wire that became undone and would have affected approximately eight motorcycles that were parked on the compound and this resulted in a fire being caused.  The fire service personnel were summoned and they responded, however, because of the high tension where they had to await the arrival of BEL personnels. The BEL personnel arrived and the fire was  subsequently contained and the extent of the damages are limited to the said eight motorcycles. The property building was not affected by the fire. The motorcycles, were not the motorcycles that were being used by the police officers. They were actually properties that were in possession of the police as a consequence of abandoned property,  or property whose owner cannot be identified, suspected to have been stolen.”

The incident occurred just after ten o’clock this morning.
