Fisherman Killed in Dangriga Shooting, Police Investigating

Police in Dangriga are investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a thirty-four-year-old fisherman on Friday evening.  Reports indicate that around 6:12 p.m. on Friday, authorities responded to reports of gunfire along South Riverside Street in Dangriga Town, Stann Creek District. Upon arrival, officers discovered the motionless body of a dark-skinned male later identified as Bernaldo Gorosica, a resident of Apartment Ten, Jungle Hut area.  Gorosica was identified at the scene by his mother, sixty-year-old Altia Gorosica.  Speaking on the investigation was ASP Stacy Smith in today’s press brief.

Stacy Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Police:  “Police in Dangriga are investigating a shooting incident that resulted in the death of Bernaldo Gorosica, a 34-year-old Belizean fisherman of Dangriga Town. The investigation commenced on Friday, 6 February, 2026, at approximately 6:12 p.m. when police were alerted to the sound of gunshots being fired on South Riverside Street in Dangriga Town. Officers from the Crime Investigation Branch, along with the Quick Response Team, responded to the area where they observed the unresponsive body of Gorosica, which exhibited apparent gunshot wounds. Initial investigations have revealed that Gorosica was walking along South Riverside Street at the aforementioned date and time when an individual who was traveling in a grey silver-like Chevrolet vehicle without license plate fired several shots in his direction. A police operation was immediately launched by the QRT personnel and this led to a silver Chevrolet being pursued and intercepted near the outskirts of Dangriga Town. A male person was observed exiting the vehicle and making good his escape in the bushy terrain of that area. The vehicle has since been impounded and the identity of the registered owner has been ascertained. One person who police believe can assist in this investigation has been detained and another individual is being sought in connection with this ongoing investigation.”

The victim’s body was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:45 p.m. by a medical doctor./
