Five manatees; four males and one female, were spotted in Belize City as they engaged in mating activities. The herd was spotted near the Yarborough area yesterday. Initially, it was believed that they were either lost or in distress. It turns out, however, that they were in a mating session. Residents gathered in the area to see how they could have assisted the mammals, but marine experts were quick to educate the group on the situation. Love News spoke with Jamal Galves, Project Manager at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute, who explained that manatee mating activity, while year-round, is more common during this time of year.
Galves stressed the importance of not disturbing animals during this sensitive time, warning that human interference could lead to injury. He urged the public to keep a safe and respectful distance to allow the manatees to complete their natural behavior without disruption.
Reporters on the scene observed as many as five manatees participating in the activity.
