Five survive 40-foot plunge near Maracas lookout

Five people escaped with injuries after their car plunged about 40 feet down a precipice near the Maracas Bay lookout on Sunday afternoon after a suspected brake failure.

Police said the group, all from Marabella, was travelling in a white Mitsubishi Lancer along the North Coast Road at about 3.45 pm. The driver reportedly attempted to stop near the lookout to buy cotton candy but the vehicle failed to stop when the brakes were applied.

The car continued forward, went over the edge of the road and landed upside down at the bottom of the precipice.

Three occupants climbed back up the embankment and called for help. Fire officers from the Santa Cruz Fire Station rescued the remaining two passengers.

All five were taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital with head and limb injuries. Police said they were treated and listed in stable condition.

The Mitsubishi Lancer remained at the bottom of the precipice up to Monday morning.
