A 39-year-old Belizean educator, Macario Coy, who also served as a former senator for the United Democratic Party (UDP), has been formally arrested and charged with the offence of sexual assault, following a complaint by a female colleague. Investigations began on Friday, November 7, when a 36-year-old female teacher reported to the police that she was sexually assaulted by Coy on Tuesday, November 4 at approximately 6:00 p.m. in the southern region. On Friday, November 21, Macario Coy voluntarily surrendered himself at the Punta Gorda Police Formation, accompanied by his attorney, and was subsequently taken into formal custody. At his court appearance, Coy was granted bail in the amount of $3,000 and is scheduled to appear again in court on January 20, 2026. Macario Coy is not only a teacher but also served previously as a senator affiliated with the United Democratic Party and reportedly held the position of principal at one time. His political and educational roles place him in a position of public trust, which adds significant gravity to the charges being levelled against him. The case has drawn public attention due to the dual roles of the accused as both an educator and former legislator. The next court hearing on January 20 will likely set timelines for pre-trial matters, witness disclosures, and potential plea considerations.
