Francis: Compensating Athletes Among Suggested Fixes for Relay Woes

Jamaica’s team is facing challenge staging relay practice.

Head coach of the MVP Track Club, Stephen Francis, says it’s time the powers that be solve this age old problem.

Nationwide’s Wayne Walker is in Paris and file this report.

Jamaica has staged a few relay practices since arriving in Europe for the Paris Olympic Games.

However, none of those sessions were staged with the full strength unit, which again begs the question of how seriously the country takes the relays.

Jamaica are the reigning Olympic women’s 4x100m champions but were beaten to the gold by the USA at the last two World Championships.

Since arriving in Paris the Americans have staged relay sessions with their main runners.

Francis says those countries have a system of compensating those athletes who make themselves available for practice.

According to Francis he has already suggested that Jamaica stage weekend relay practice sessions, three or four weekends per season, failing that he says the athletes must be paid if they are asked to make themselves available close to championships or during their season.
