Freetown Area Representative Francis Fonseca has publicly thrown his support behind Deputy Mayor Eluide Miller in the race to become the People’s United Party’s mayoral candidate for Belize City. Fonseca’s endorsement adds significant political weight to Miller’s campaign as the PUP prepares for a contested convention ahead of the March 2027 municipal elections. Speaking today, Fonseca said he believes Miller has the experience, energy and leadership qualities needed to head the party’s next Belize City slate.
Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs: “I’m supporting Mr Miller. Well, the convention is set as we know the National Executive set for August 30th. So, I think the delegates list will be prepared and submitted sometime this week and then, you know, the campaign proceeds over the next three weeks engage with those delegates and we move forward from there.”
Miller is seeking to succeed Mayor Bernard Wagner, who has confirmed that he will not pursue another term. The Deputy Mayor is expected to face businessman and political activist Allan Pollard Junior for the PUP nomination. Pollard has already secured the public backing of Lake Independence Area Representative Cordel Hyde. Fonseca’s endorsement of Miller now places two prominent PUP ministers on opposing sides of the internal contest. Miller topped the polls during the PUP’s 2023 Belize City municipal convention, receiving 457 votes before being elected as a councillor in March 2024. He later served as Deputy Mayor and was unanimously selected by his council colleagues to continue in that position for the 2026–2027 term./
