THERE IS a saying that lightning does not strike twice in the same place, but that was not the case yesterday at the Glenmuir playfield.

Defending champions Garvey Maceo were knocked out in the round of 16 of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition after a heavy 5-2 defeat to home team Glenmuir.

This was the same fate suffered by Clarendon College last year at the very same venue when they were eliminated 2-1 by Cornwall College. With yesterday’s win, Glenmuir made it three victories in a row in Zone 3 to finish on nine points and top the group.

Glenmuir will be joined in the quarterfinals by Clarendon College after the Devon Anderson-coached team thumped Maggotty 5-0 at St Elizabeth Technical. They ended on four points, the same as Garvey Maceo, but advanced with a superior goal difference of four compared to Garvey Maceo’s one.

In what was billed as the top game of the round — this being their third meeting of the season — the home team was determined to avenge their 3-2 loss to Garvey Maceo in second-round action after initially blowing them away 4-0 in the preliminary round.

Glenmuir made their intentions clear very early, taking the lead in the third minute through midfielder Dusting Cohen, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. That goal sparked Glenmuir’s momentum, and before halftime, they extended their lead. Orel Miller struck in the 34th and 45th minutes to give the hosts a comfortable 3-0 advantage at the break.

With their backs against the wall, the defending champions pulled one back early in the second half as Omarion Bryan converted from the penalty spot in the 47th minute.

But Glenmuir quickly shut down any hopes of a comeback, stretching their lead to 4-1 in the 67th minute through Oneil Headley.

Garvey Maceo found another goal with less than nine minutes to go through O’Brien, his second of the game, but it came far too late. Christopher Young sealed the victory for Glenmuir in time added, completing the 5-2 win.

Winning coach Andre Peart was pleased with the team’s performance.

“A good win for the team. We really had control of the game and didn’t allow our opponents any serious look on goal,” said Peart.

“Another step for the boys. We are now in the quarterfinals and just have to recover and prepare for our next game on Saturday,” he added.

A disappointed Garvey Maceo coach, Lester Hibbert, said his team simply fell short.

“It was a game of moments, and we had numerous defensive errors today. We got at least three clear goals, but the guys were not up to it. We win some and lose some. Congratulations to Glenmuir, and we will now prepare for the Ben Francis Knockout,” said Hibbert.

In Zone 2, Ocho Rios High School were bumped out of the competition after St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over them yesterday.

The result left Ocho Rios third in the zone on three points while STETHS topped it with a perfect nine.

Following STETHS into the quarterfinals are Kemps Hill High School, who finished second in the zone on six points after the 5-0 thumping of already eliminated Old Harbour.
