DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Garvey Maceo were off to a positive start in their opening game in Group 7 of the Round of 32 in the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition after a comfortable 3-0 home win over Old Harbour High School.

In what was a lacklustre first-half performance, Garvey Maceo took the lead in the 33rd minute through a goalkeeping error – Damion McIntosh tapping in from six yards to give his team a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Looking more composed in the second half, Garvey Maceo controlled the game in the final 15 minutes and extended their advantage in the 82nd. After several missed chances from corner kicks, they were finally rewarded when an Old Harbour defender headed the ball into his own net.

The champions sealed the win in the 89th minute after being awarded a penalty. Lexjay Gordon weaved his way through three players before being brought down inside the area, and Malik Robinson calmly converted from the spot to make it 3-0.

Winning coach Lester Hibbert was pleased with the result.

“It’s a positive result for us in our first game of the round, picking up three points,” said Hibbert.

“Old Harbour played a very compact game and we had to be patient. Once we scored, the game opened up and we were able to add to our tally. We’re taking it game by game and will have to regroup for our second match away at Titchfield, where we hope to get another win and three points.”

Old Harbour’s coach, Dwight Whyte, said his team lost focus at crucial moments.

“It wasn’t a bad performance. But we were lacklustre in some areas and lost concentration in the end, which cost us the game,” said Whyte.

“Simple mistakes like those hurt us in the first round, and we can’t afford them in the second. We have no choice now but to go for wins in our remaining two games.”
