Gayle calls it quits, Waterhouse opt for Argentine replacement

Argentina-born coach Javier Ainstein is set to replace Marcel ‘Fuzzy’ Gayle as head coach of Jamaica Premier League outfit Waterhouse Football Club.

The Gleaner was reliably informed that Gayle, who has been in charge of the Drewsland-based club since 2018, tendered his resignation to the club’s executives yesterday.

In the meantime, Gayle’s assistant, Jermaine Miller, will take charge of the team until Ainstein receives his work permit.

Ainstein, who turns 43 on January 12, holds an A licence from CONMEBOL Argentina and a UEFA C licence from the Scottish Football Association. He is also a citizen of Panama. He coached AD Santos in Costa Rica in 2025 and previously served as head coach of AD Guanacasteca in 2014. Ainstein has also had coaching stints with Panamanian clubs Tauro FC, C.D. Plaza Amador, C.D. Universitario, and Panama City during his coaching career.

Gayle’s resignation follows a poor run of form in which the club managed just one win from their last seven matches. That sequence included three draws and three defeats. In Gayle’s final game in charge on Sunday, Waterhouse recorded a 1-0 victory over hosts Montego Bay United.

At the time, it had been reported that Gayle would have been given three games to turn the club’s fortunes around and the 1-0 win suggested he had done enough to stave off the axe, at least for the next two.

Overall, Waterhouse have recorded four wins from 13 games this season and are currently sixth in the Premier League standings on 15 points.

Efforts to contact Gayle for a comment proved futile, as several calls to his mobile phone went unanswered.
