DEFENDING champions GC Foster College were in a no-nonsense mood on Wednesday as they retained the intercollegiate senior netball title with a commanding 40-31 victory over The Mico University College in the final at St Andrew High School.
Both teams had advanced to the final in contrasting fashion a week earlier. Mico squeezed out a narrow win over last year’s finalists Moneague College, while GC Foster blew away Church Teachers’ College in their semifinal encounters.
Anticipation high
With five members of the national squad to the World Youth Cup in Gibraltar in September on show – three from GC Foster and two from Mico – anticipation was high for an epic clash. However, it turned out to be a one-sided affair as former collegiate queens Mico, coached by ex-Sunshine Girls head coach Minnette Reynolds, found the going tough against GC Foster, led by current Sunshine Girls coach Sasher-Gaye Henry.
Led by last year’s Holmwood Technical player and National Under-21 representative Jada Ricketts at goal attack in tandem with goal shooter Mikeal Walker, GC Foster were in early control, leading 11-7 after the first quarter before taking a 20-15 lead at half-time.
Coming into the third quarter, GC Foster stepped up the tempo with centre Jessica Chaplin and Zaudi Green playing their part as they went into a big 30-20 lead at the break before completing a nine-goal win in the end. Walker topscored for GC Foster with 24 goals from 33 attempts, with Ricketts chipping in with 26 from 23. Goal shooter Kededra Wright, with 23 goals from 24 attempts, was the leading scorer for Mico.
In the play-off for third place, Moneague defeated Church 44-35.
The University of Technology a week earlier were crowned intermediate champions after upstaging GC Foster C 30-22. Bethlehem Moravian College defeated St Joseph’s Teachers’ College 30-27 to walk away with the Junior title.
