22-year-old Gian Teck will learn his sentence on October 28 after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a fourteen-year-old girl. During a mitigation hearing yesterday before Justice Nigel Pilgrim, Teck asked the court for forgiveness and leniency. Teck was eighteen when the offence occurred in June 2023. He initially pleaded not guilty but changed his plea on October 1, after the girl testified during a trial held behind closed doors. His attorney, Javier Williams, asked for a sentence at the lower end of the applicable range, pointing to Teck’s youth at the time of the offence and his lack of previous convictions. Addressing the court, Teck asked that his circumstances be considered and that he be shown mercy. Crown Counsel Kirk Brown argued that any reduction for the guilty plea should be limited because it came after the trial had begun and the complainant had given evidence. Brown also asked the court to order counselling as part of Teck’s rehabilitation, alongside a custodial sentence. Although the attorneys discussed sentencing guidelines and possible reductions, Brown ultimately submitted that the sentence should not fall below the five-year mandatory minimum cited during the hearing. Justice Pilgrim reserved his decision to consider the submissions before handing down sentence next Wednesday.
