Twenty-two-year-old Gian Teck has pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a fourteen-year-old girl and has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison pending sentencing. Teck changed his plea today, on the fourth day of his High Court trial before Justice Nigel Pilgrim. The trial began on Monday, September 28. The complainant testified in a closed court, with Crown Counsel Kirk Brown presenting the prosecution’s case. Teck, who was represented by attorney Javier Williams, had initially pleaded not guilty. According to the agreed facts, the offence occurred at Teck’s home on June 5, 2023, when he was eighteen and the girl was fourteen. During a police interview later that month, Teck admitted having sexual intercourse with her but claimed he believed she was fifteen. He was formally arrested and charged on June 30, 2023. Teck had been out on bail, but Justice Pilgrim remanded him after the guilty plea. The court will hear mitigation on his behalf and sentence him on October twenty-second. In a separate case, two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse against Teck were discontinued in January after that complainant declined to testify. Justice Candace Nanton told him at the time that the prosecution’s decision to enter a nolle prosequi was not an acquittal and that those charges could be brought again.
