AFTER SIX days of competitive karate, the Central Caribbean Cup which took place in Panama from March 24-30 ended with Jamaica taking home a gold and a bronze medal, c0urtesy of brothers Rasandre and Andrew Evans.
Rasandre Evans fought his way to the top of the podium in the 14-15 cadet male kumite (fighting) - 57 kg.
He defeated competitors from Panama, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela, to walk away as champion.
Coach and Commonwealth Karate Championships bronze medallist, Valentyna Zolotarova, called the gold-medal-winning achievement a proud moment for the island.
“Rasandre works very hard. He faced very difficult opponents in this tournament and proved that he is capable of standing in front of anybody and defending the Jamaican flag with honour. I am very happy with his performance,” she said.
His younger brother, Andrew, would also claim a podium finish, taking bronze in the U12-35kg category.
The event, which was supported by Centro Caribe Sport, saw nations from across the Caribbean and Central America competing.
President of Jamaica Karate Tony Robinson said he was happy with the podium finishes and that this was a great platform for the nine-member team to further develop their skills in the sport.
“The event was a great measurement of the progress of Rasandre and Andrew. It was also a good development opportunity for all of our athletes because, in addition to the tournament, there was a training camp with world champions Douglas Brose of Brazil and Antonio Diaz of Venezuela, as well as international world-renowned instructor Dris Elmanani. Our athletes from Kingston enjoyed the training very much and are bringing back new skills to share with everyone in the karate community. Khalil Gordon also attended a coaching course and is bringing back new information for his students, and all Jamaican karate-ka as well,” he said.
