Golden Grove hoping to avoid last year’s pitfall in U17 final

Last year’s beaten finalists Golden Grove United will be looking to go one step further this time around when they face off against York United today in the final of the St Thomas Mckay Security Under-17 competition at York Oval at 4 p.m.

Gold Grove booked their spot in the final after they defeated Seaforth 1-0 through a 16th-minute goal from Jabari Ellis.

Golden Grove, who will enter the final with an impressive unbeaten record this season, also entered last year’s final unbeaten.

However, they fell just short of the mark at the final hurdle, a mistake head coach Marlon Russell will be looking to avoid.

“It is now more important than ever for us to walk away with the title this time around,” Russell told The Sunday Gleaner in a pre-game interview.

Only two players returned to the Golden Grove team from last year’s outfit.

Russell said it is a positive sign for the club to be able to return to the final despite fielding an entirely new crop of players.

“The team that we had last year, it was a more experienced team and a bit more rounded team. What I have with this team now is a lot experience in key areas like our defence,” he explained.

“We had to make a lot of changes because from that team last year, we only have two players left so I guess we must be doing something good at the club. The key about it is that these youngsters are hungry and they are dedicated to what they want.”

It will not be an easy outing for Golden Grove, however, as they face a formidable York squad who are keen on leaving with the title in hand.

York enter the final after defeating the then unbeaten Baptist Alliance 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

Before the grand finale, Baptist Alliance will face off against Seaforth for third in the first match of the doubleheader, set to kick off at 2 p.m.
