Govt presses Venezuela for answers over allegations of destabilisation plot

2 weeks ago 5

The Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs has moved to clarify remarks from Venezuelan Justice Minister Diosdado Cabello, who has reportedly claimed that Trinidad and Tobago is being used as a transit point for individuals engaged in activities aimed at destabilising the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

The allegations have raised concerns in Port-of-Spain, given the potential implications for bilateral relations and regional security.

In an official statement, the Ministry confirmed it has contacted Trinidad and Tobago’s Embassy in Caracas for urgent clarification and further information on the comments.

Authorities have pledged to update the national community once more details are available.

While seeking answers, the Ministry underscored that Trinidad and Tobago remains committed to a cooperative and respectful relationship with its South American neighbour, one rooted in mutual trust, regional stability, and the principles of sovereign equality.

Cabello’s reported remarks come against the backdrop of ongoing political and economic turbulence in Venezuela, where the government has long accused external actors of fomenting unrest.

The suggestion that Trinidad and Tobago could be linked, even indirectly, to such activities injects a fresh layer of sensitivity into an already delicate diplomatic landscape.
