International recording artist Shaggy has reaffirmed the value of the Grammy Awards, describing the accolade as a significant milestone for any musician, despite recurring debates within reggae circles about award outcomes.

In an interview with Observer Online, the two-time Grammy winner emphasized that the recognition carries weight within the global music industry.

“The Grammy is a huge platform and anybody weh tell yuh say dem nuh care bout Grammy, a lie dem a tell. It’s great to be recognised by the highest level of your peers. It is a fantastic feeling,” Shaggy said.

Reflecting on his own journey, Shaggy referenced his first win for Boombastic in 1996 and his later success in 2019 alongside Sting, noting that the achievement remains deeply rewarding.

“I got Boombastic (won) in 1996 and I had like a ton of nominations (after) till mi say, mi nuh business bout Grammy, it nuh mean nuttin. Mek mi tell yuh suppen, when mi win it the other day (2019) with Sting, a di sweetest feeling. We want it!” he added.

Call for Greater Industry Participation

Shaggy also pointed to the importance of understanding the Grammy voting process, encouraging industry players to become more actively involved.

He explained that artists and professionals must be registered voters to influence outcomes, suggesting that criticism often comes from those who are not engaged in the system.

“You have to be a registered voter and you have to be a part of it, to get the result that you want as a voter,” he said. “I think everybody should still strive for it.”

New Album “Lottery” Set for Release

Meanwhile, Shaggy is preparing to release his upcoming studio album, Lottery, on May 15. The project is being launched in collaboration with VP Records and his Ranch Entertainment label.

The album features collaborations with several international artistes, including Anthony HamiltonJeremih, and Robin Thicke.

Its lead single, Looking Lovely, featuring Robin Thicke, blends Caribbean and R&B influences, reflecting the project’s overall theme of confidence and celebration.

Career Longevity and Continued Success

Shaggy said the album’s title reflects his personal philosophy of taking risks and believing in his own potential, a mindset that has guided his rise from Kingston to global success.

With a career spanning decades, Shaggy has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and continues to maintain a presence on international charts.

He is currently featured on the Billboard Rhythmic Airplay Top 40 chart with Boom Body, a collaboration with Akonand Aidonia. Another recent track, Til A Mawnin featuring Sting, also charted in the past year.

Despite ongoing debates surrounding reggae’s place at the Grammys, Shaggy maintains that the award remains a valuable platform for global recognition in the music industry.
