Trinidad and Tobago was represented twice at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night, with local talent earning recognition in both music video and classical music categories.
Trinbagonian producer Jolene Mendes was part of the production team behind hip hop star Doechii’s hit track Anxiety, which won the Grammy Award for Best Music Video. The winning project surpassed submissions from Sabrina Carpenter, Sade, OK Go, and Clipse.
Although Doechii and the video’s director, James Mackel, were not present to accept the award, Mendes took the stage on their behalf, receiving the Grammy and delivering the acceptance remarks. While Doechii herself is not Trinbagonian, Mendes’ involvement placed Trinidad and Tobago firmly in the spotlight during the ceremony.
Also representing the national colors of red, white, and black was Trinidadian-Canadian conductor Kwame Ryan. Ryan captured the Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording for the Houston Grand Opera’s production of composer Jake Heggie’s Intelligence. A 2017 ANSA Laureate and former director of the UTT Academy for the Performing Arts, Ryan’s win highlights Trinidad and Tobago’s continued impact in the global classical music arena.
Known as music’s biggest night, the 68th Annual Grammy Awards was held in Los Angeles. Other major winners included Billie Eilish, who won Song of the Year for Wildflower; Olivia Dean, named Best New Artist; Bad Bunny, who took Album of the Year; and Kendrick Lamar and SZA, who won Record of the Year for Luther.
