Gramps Morgan’s song used in Tyler Perry’s new Madea movie

Writer, producer and director, Tyler Perry, is up to his comedic tricks again with the release of the 13th film in the Madea cinematic universe – Madea’s Destination Wedding – and this time around country-reggae singer, Gramps Morgan, is right there with him. Well, sort of. Gramps’ song If You’re Looking for Me, produced by Johnny Reid on the Halo Entertainment label, is one of the tracks in the movie, and the singer is quite ecstatic about this development.

“I was totally shocked when I heard the information about my music being put in the movie produced by Tyler Perry. Things like this don’t happen every day for artistes ... and not for reggae and dancehall artistes,” Gramps told The Gleaner.

He added, “The song is taken from my country reggae album, Positive Vibration. Someone from Tyler Perry’s camp heard the song and reached out to my record label ... and the rest is history. The song really fits the theme of where they shot the movie and the energy of the islands.”

The groovy, laid-back, If You’re Looking For Me is unadulterated island vibes. The music video, which has more than four million views, sees Gramps relaxing by a pool wearing shorts and looking cool in his red, green and gold shades, while his musician friends pick guitar strings and add flavour to the vacation vibe.

Hanging out in the sun/Blowing smoke, sipping rum/Beneath a big palm tree/That’s where I’ll be/If you’re looking for me,” Gramps croons, making it plain that life is all about having fun in the sun. This ties in perfectly with the popular destination wedding lifestyle.

In Madea’s Destination Wedding, as expected, Tyler Perry fully embraces his “soft girl era”, as he dresses up as protagonist, Mabel ‘Madea’ Simmons. The synopsis notes that Madea “packs her best floral dresses and a whole lot of chaos when the Simmons family heads to the Bahamas for her grandniece’s whirlwind wedding”. The movie make its début on Netflix today, which, quite coincidentally is the birthday of the group’s late lead singer, Peter ‘Peetah’ Morgan.

“When I found out about the song being in the movie, I totally understood why I decided to take a chance on creating an album like Positive Vibration,” Gramps shared. And as for seeing a clip from the movie, I just saw [one] a few days ago.”

Gramps, the self-proclaimed King of Country Reggae, is currently on a world tour with his Grammy Award-winning sibling group, Morgan Heritage. The tour, which kicked off in Tamarac, Florida, on June 29, saw the return of keyboardist, Una Morgan, who has been on a hiatus for just under a decade. Morgan Heritage will be performing at various festivals in Germany, Holland, Sweden, Spain, and the UK.

“The tour is going very well. It’s great to see my fellow musicians out here on the road and a lot of young musicians. It’s very encouraging at the same time. It is an emotional time for the family as we toured Europe for the first time without my brother Peter Morgan. But we are taking it one day at a time,” Gramps told The Gleaner.
