The Government of Grenada said it is engaging with United States authorities through established diplomatic channels following a US Department of State announcement of visa restrictions on African, Cuban and Grenadian government officials and their families.
In a statement today, the government assured Grenadians the matter is being handled “with the utmost responsibility and in the best interests of our nation,” and urged the public to rely only on official updates from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the US State Department, the restrictions target those allegedly complicit in Cuba’s medical mission scheme, in which Cuban doctors are sent abroad at high prices but most of the revenue is retained by Cuban authorities.
The statement described the programme as a form of forced labour, urging governments to pay doctors directly and calling on nations that support democracy and human rights to join efforts to end the practice.
