Fusion roots reggae ensemble, Groundation, returns with what is described as their “most soul-stirring work to date”. Candle Burning, scheduled to be released on May 23, is the band’s 11th studio album, and it features collaborations with legends Alpha Blondy, Mykal Rose, Mutabaruka and Thomas Mapfumo.
Recorded over an immersive 10-day session at ICP Studios in Brussels, Belgium, Candle Burning captures the raw and organic essence of roots reggae through warm, analogue sound production. The album is a testament to Groundation’s dedication to authenticity, musical craftsmanship, and deep storytelling.
“ Candle Burning is about the light that guides us, the fire within us that fuels our journey, and the energy that connects all things,” explained Harrison Stafford, the band’s visionary founder. “This is not an album of despair, but one of hope and strength, a celebration of the power we all carry inside.”
With soulful horns, intricate jazz-inspired compositions, and deep, pulsing rhythms, Candle Burning promises to be a transformative listening experience for longtime fans and new audiences alike. Groundation has long been hailed for their ability to blend traditional reggae with elements of jazz, funk, and world music, and Candle Burning continues that tradition while pushing the boundaries of conscious, message-driven music.
The first singles, namely Energy, The Youth and The Light, have officially been released and tour dates throughout Europe, California, and Brazil have been announced with more to come.
Formed in 1998 by Harrison Stafford, Groundation has been a pioneering force in modern roots reggae, delivering powerful albums and electrifying live performances that have captivated audiences worldwide. With a lineup of exceptionally talented musicians and a commitment to musical innovation, the band continues to spread messages of unity, consciousness, and positivity through their music.
