Guyana Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken

As Guyana prepares for its general and regional elections on September 1, 2025, Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken has pledged that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) will act “swiftly and decisively” against anyone seeking to disrupt the democratic process.

“Let it be clearly understood. Any attempt to create disorder, intimidate others or break the law will be dealt with swiftly and decisively,” Hicken said in a pre-broadcast statement released Tuesday night.

Hicken assured citizens that the GPF is fully equipped to maintain law and order before, during, and after the polls. He noted that officers will be stationed across all ten administrative regions and 12 policing districts—not to interfere with voting, but to ensure that citizens can exercise their constitutional rights without fear.

“This is an important moment for our country. A time for all of us to show the world that Guyana is a peaceful, respectful, and united nation,” he said. “The role of the GPF is to maintain order and to ensure that every citizen can exercise their right without fear or disruption.”

While calling on voters to uphold peace and dignity during the elections, Hicken reiterated a zero-tolerance stance toward misconduct. He urged citizens to carry themselves with pride and to help safeguard national unity during this pivotal period.

“Together, let’s safeguard the peace before, during, and after elections,” he said.
