AT THE first executive meeting of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) for 2025 on Friday, the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) was officially approved as hosts of the organisation’s XIV Annual Workshop and XXIII Annual General Assembly on October 18 and 19 respectively.
The decision came upon the acceptance of a bid from Guyana, which has recently been investing in hosting more and more regional events.
In its bid submission the GOA stated that Guyana has “a proven track record of hosting high-profile events, state-of-the-art venues, a warm and culturally rich atmosphere, and the full backing of our government and stakeholders, Guyana is uniquely positioned to deliver a memorable and impactful experience for CANOC members and delegates”.
It was also stated that the hosting of the CANOC annual events “presents a pivotal opportunity to deepen collaboration with government ministries, embassies, NGOs, sponsors, and the wider sporting community in Guyana.
In a report from the desk of CANOC president, Keith Joseph, Guyana’s local organising committee is expected to “maximise the occasion to showcase the country’s dedication to sports development and international cooperation”.
According to the GOA, the Pegasus Hotel and Suites is the designated accommodation venue, and both the Workshop and General Assembly will be hosted there.
In the meantime, the CANOC executive has thanked the GOA and offered its expertise in planning the two events.
“We are confident that the Guyana Olympic Association will provide us all with a most enjoyable and unforgettable experience over the period that we are in the country. This is consistent with the country’s own commitment to service excellence, the development of Caribbean sport and the latter’s capacity to build solidarity and facilitate regional integration,” read the president’s missive.
“We appeal to all the members of CANOC to lend full support to the GOA as they plan and prepare for the hosting of the XIV CANOC Workshop and XXIII General Assembly in October. Let this be another showing of our firm commitment to CANOC’s mantra, ‘Beyond Possible’, taking us to yet another level in continental and global sport.”
