Health Workers Receive Specialized Training in Laparoscopic Surgery

Medical professionals from across the country undergo specialized training in laparoscopic surgery, a modern surgical technique expected to improve patient outcomes and expand treatment options within the public health sector.  The Ministry of Health and Wellness today announced that Belizean doctors, nurses, and public health technicians are participating in intensive hands-on training designed to build local expertise in the internationally recognized procedure, commonly known as “keyhole” surgery.  Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive technique used to diagnose and treat a range of abdominal and pelvic conditions. Unlike traditional open surgery, the procedure requires only small incisions, allowing surgeons to operate with specialized instruments and cameras.  Once fully implemented, patients requiring surgical intervention are expected to benefit from reduced pain, smaller surgical scars, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times, allowing them to return more quickly to their families, workplaces, and daily activities.
