Prime Minister and Jamaica Labour Party, JLP. leader, Dr. Andrew Holness, has confirmed that he will announce the date of the country’s next General Election at a mass rally on Sunday.

The mass rally is set for Half-Way Tree, St. Andrew, where thousands of supporters are expected to gather.

Holness confirmed the long-anticipated announcement during a meeting of the party’s Central Executive on Saturday.

The Prime Minister urged JLP candidates to approach voters with humility and a renewed commitment to “continuing to work hard to improve more lives in Jamaica” as they seek election or re-election.

Dr. Holness also reminded the party’s representatives to focus on solving problems in their constituencies, conduct their campaigns with dignity, and maintain “the party’s established standards of decency, decorum, and professionalism.”

The JLP leader signalled that the campaign will centre on the government’s performance over the last two terms, including what he described as a record of over 20 consecutive quarters of economic growth, eight years without new taxes, and a significant reduction in violent crime, particularly murders.

He also pointed to record low unemployment, a fall in poverty levels, and measures aimed at easing the cost of living — among them, a revision of the income tax threshold, the launch of the Solidarity Programme, and a more than 150 per cent increase in the minimum wage.

Saturday’s Central Executive meeting also confirmed all 63 JLP candidates for the upcoming polls, fulfilling the party’s constitutional requirement ahead of a general election.

The Central Executive is the JLP’s second highest decision-making body, behind its Annual Conference.

Holness’s announcement tomorrow will officially start the countdown to Jamaica’s 18th General Election since Universal Adult Suffrage in 1944.
