As the investigation into the murder of Dr. Naun Ulices Bonilla continues to capture national attention, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, Elton Bennett, is calling on Belizeans to have confidence in the country’s criminal justice system. In a social media post published following this morning’s arraignment, Bennett reflected on the recent conviction of Elmer Nah for the murders of Jon, David, and Vivian Ramnarace, describing the verdict as a significant moment for justice in Belize. Bennett noted that while no court ruling can undo the pain experienced by victims’ families, the successful prosecution in the Ramnarace case demonstrates that justice can prevail, even in complex and lengthy criminal matters. Drawing parallels between the two cases, Bennett pointed out that on the same day the Ramnarace family received a measure of closure through a guilty verdict, the country was plunged into mourning following the fatal shooting of Dr. Bonilla in Belmopan. He observed that just seven days later, investigators had secured arrests and charges against two suspects, a development he said reflects the dedication and efficiency of the agencies involved. The CEO commended the Belize Police Department, the National Forensic Science Service, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Financial Intelligence Unit, and other partners who contributed to the investigation. Bennett stated that the coordinated effort demonstrated the Government’s commitment to pursuing justice and holding offenders accountable. According to Bennett, the criminal justice system is often criticized for delays and procedural complexities. However, he emphasized that successful prosecutions require careful adherence to evidentiary standards and due process, particularly in serious criminal matters. The senior government official also acknowledged the difficult road ahead for Dr. Bonilla’s family, noting that criminal proceedings can be emotionally taxing for victims’ relatives and the wider public. Nevertheless, he encouraged Belizeans not to lose faith in the justice system and pointed to the perseverance shown by the Ramnarace family throughout their decade-long quest for justice. Bennett concluded his statement by urging citizens to remain vigilant, support their communities, and work collectively toward a safer Belize while allowing the judicial process to take its course in the Bonilla case.
