Minister of Home Affairs, Oscar Mira, and Chief Executive Officer Elton Bennett conducted an official visit to the Belize Central Prison on Friday. The visit included a comprehensive tour of the facility, where the minister and his CEO were briefed on daily operations, inmate conditions, and ongoing challenges within the prison system. The engagement forms part of the ministry’s continued oversight as it works to strengthen rehabilitation efforts and institutional management. Following the tour, Bennett shared his observations, noting key areas of progress as well as issues that still require attention within the facility.
The visit also comes at a time of transition in the prison’s leadership. Long-serving prison administrator Virgilio Murillo is preparing to demit office, with George Gomez set to take over as his successor. Ceo Bennett spoke on that transition, indicating that the handover process is expected to ensure continuity in operations while positioning the institution for further improvements under new leadership.
Murillo is expected to exit the role in early July, bringing to a close a twelve-year tenure as Chief Executive Officer and Director of the Belize Central Prison under the Kolbe Foundation.
