A 67-year-old Santa Cruz man has been arrested after police seized a homemade shotgun and ammunition during an anti-crime exercise conducted in the North-Eastern Division.

According to a media release issued on Wednesday, officers carried out the operation on Tuesday between 4 pm and 9 pm as part of ongoing efforts to target illegal firearms and criminal activity in the area.

At approximately 5:50 pm, officers attached to the Western Division Task Force went to the suspect’s residence along Saddle Road, Lower Santa Cruz, where they conducted a search of the premises.

During the exercise, officers discovered and seized a homemade shotgun from a bedroom in the house. Police also found eleven rounds of 12-gauge cartridges concealed inside a toddler’s lunch kit in the living room.

The discovery led to the immediate arrest of the 67-year-old occupant, who remains under investigation in connection with the seizure.

Police did not disclose whether the firearm had been linked to any previous incidents or whether additional charges are expected.

The anti-crime operation formed part of continued law enforcement efforts aimed at removing illegal firearms and ammunition from communities and reducing the potential for violent crime.

The exercise was sanctioned by Senior Superintendent Williams and spearheaded by Superintendent Mohammed and Acting Assistant Superintendent of Police Borris.

Operational coordination was led by Inspector Grant and Acting Sergeant Dominique, while supervision on the ground was carried out by Corporal Robinson.
