Honduran Worker Suffers Severe Injuries After High-Voltage Electrocution in Stann Creek

A 33-year-old Honduran national, Jose Antonio Serrato, a resident of Mayan King in the Stann Creek District, was seriously injured on Friday, after being electrocuted at his new job site. The accident occurred around 5 p.m. when Serrato, while pulling up a metal purlin, came into contact with a 22,000-volt high-tension wire. The incident reportedly happened as he was handling a metal purlin, which reportedly made contact with the overhead power line, delivering a jolt of electricity to his hands. Co-workers quickly came to his rescue, bringing him down from the building and rushing him to the hospital.  He sustained severe injuries to both hands and a lesion to his lung and is currently receiving treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. According to an eyewitness, Serrato was working on a construction project when he was struck by a powerful electrical current.  In response to the tragedy, Serrato’s community in Santa Cruz Village is organizing a fundraising event to support him and his family during this difficult time. The food sale, which will be held on August 23, aims to help cover the costs of his medical treatment and recovery.
