Motorists traveling along the Hummingbird Highway can once again use the route after emergency repair works were completed this afternoon at Mile 17.5. The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing has confirmed that the affected section of the highway, which was temporarily closed earlier today after a sinkhole developed beneath the road surface, has now been reopened to traffic. The closure came after engineers discovered that a section of pavement had collapsed above an existing culvert, prompting officials to immediately shut down the roadway as a precaution while repairs were carried out. According to the Ministry’s initial assessment, the culvert itself remained structurally sound and continued to function as designed. However, the embankment and road surface above it had failed, creating a hazardous condition for motorists. Emergency crews worked throughout the day to stabilize the area and restore the roadway, allowing traffic to resume by this afternoon. During the closure, drivers traveling between Belize City and the western districts were forced to seek alternative routes, resulting in delays for commuters and commercial traffic. The Ministry thanked the public for its patience and cooperation while the repairs were being undertaken and reiterated that the temporary closure was necessary to ensure the safety of all road users. Officials say they will continue monitoring the area to ensure the roadway remains safe following today’s repairs.
