Hurricane Preparedness Urged Ahead of 2026 Season

Monday, June 1, will officially mark the start of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, and while forecasters are predicting slightly below-normal storm activity this year, Belizean authorities are reminding the public that only one storm is needed to create a major disaster.  The National Meteorological Service and the National Emergency Management Organization, NEMO, today issued their annual hurricane season advisory, noting that the season officially runs from June first to November thirtieth. According to the forecast, the Atlantic Basin is expected to produce between eight and fourteen named storms this year. Of those systems, three to six are expected to strengthen into hurricanes, while one to three could become major hurricanes classified as Category Three or higher.  Meteorologists say one of the main factors influencing the season is the likely development of a strong El Niño phenomenon, which typically reduces hurricane activity in the Atlantic Basin. However, forecasters also noted that warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic could still provide enough energy for storm development.  The National Meteorological Service says it will continue monitoring all developing weather systems throughout the season and will work closely with NEMO to alert the public should any storm pose a threat to Belize.  Authorities are also advising families and businesses to review and update their emergency plans, stock essential supplies, and stay informed through official sources only. The public is being reminded that spreading false information during emergencies is an offence under Belizean law.  Officials say accurate updates can be accessed through the National Meteorological Service website, the NEMO website, the Met Service mobile application, and the official social media platforms of both agencies.
