AFTER NARROWLY missing out on the silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games last year, Jamaican sprint hurdler Rasheed Broadbell has set his eyes on the upcoming World Athletics Championships, promising fast times.
Broadbell was third in the men’s 110m hurdles at the Paris Games, missing out on the silver medal by three-thousandths of a second when he was edged at the line by the United States’ Daniel Roberts.
A year later, Broadbell looked back at the race with some pride.
“In Paris, I was nowhere near my best,” he said.
“Still, in the finals, I put on something and I won a medal, so I’m really grateful.”
Having started his 2025 season in fine form, Broadbell is once again ready to compete at the highest level of the sport.
The sprint hurdler claimed his first Diamond League of the year yesterday in Doha, stoping the clock in 13.14 seconds.
The win came in his third race of the year and the second consecutive time he had lowered his season’s best this season.
Speaking after the win yesterday, Broadbell explained his aim this season is to run faster every time he faces the starter.
“My aim is to be faster and faster in every race. I came out okay, so I pushed it,” he said. “I felt some pressure and I was telling myself that I should just relax. It’s so early in the season and I don’t want to cause myself any problems.
“I was first to cross the line and when I saw my mark I said ‘oh, okay’. I could have won with a faster time, but I’m good with it anyway.”
Broadbell, who had a breakout season in 2021, has represented Jamaica twice at the World Championships.
In 2022, he made it to the semifinals of the World Championships before suffering a heartbreaking campaign the following year, falling during the heats.
The two-time national champion is confident he will be ready to run fast times this season when the time is right.
“This season I’m gonna run faster and I’m not worried. Most definitely I have some plans ahead of the new season. I won’t speak much about it, but I hope to see you in Tokyo! Everything is okay, the machine is working and I’ll be out there.”
